A Heartwarming Offer: Donate to Our Food Drive, Get Discounts at Local ReStore Outlets
In a world filled with challenges, small acts of kindness can make an enormous difference. Habitat for Humanity Niagara ReStores, for the fourth consecutive year, are stepping up to the plate with a heartwarming initiative that not only benefits customers but also nourishes the souls of those in need. From September 25th to October 5th, the organization is inviting customers to participate in their food drive by bringing in non-perishable food items. In return, patrons will receive a generous 25% discount on their entire purchase at the ReStore outlets.
This initiative goes beyond mere discounts; it’s a shining example of how communities can come together to support one another in times of need. The donated non-perishable food items will be distributed to local food agencies, ensuring that the love and compassion shared by the community are felt by those who require assistance the most.
Local Impact: Each ReStore Supports a Different Food Bank
One of the remarkable aspects of this initiative is that each Habitat for Humanity Niagara ReStore location supports a different food bank in its area. This means that when you participate, you’re not only helping your local community but also forming a bond with your neighbors through your collective contributions.
- The St. Catharines location is dedicated to collecting for Community Care of St. Catharines & Thorold.
- The Grimsby location is working tirelessly to support GBF Community Services.
- The Fonthill location is focusing its efforts on assisting The Hope Centre.
A Journey That Began in 2020: Responding to Unprecedented Challenges
The inception of this food drive in 2020 was a response to the unprecedented challenges faced by local food agencies and support organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mark Carl, the CEO of Habitat Niagara, explains, “With rising inflation and the increasing cost of living post-pandemic, our community food banks continue to struggle to meet demand. We’re asking anyone who can spare some extra groceries to bring them into the ReStore, and we’ll ensure they get to those who need them.”
The list of items in greatest need includes staples that many of us take for granted but can mean the world to those facing food insecurity:
- Canned meat
- Hearty soups and stews
- School-safe snacks
- Canned fruit
- Canned vegetables
- Pasta and pasta sauce
- Packaged side dishes (i.e., Sidekicks)
Rising Need and a Shared Responsibility
Betty-Lou Souter, CEO of Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold, highlights the grim reality: “As prices rise, our service numbers increase in turn – we see an average of 65 new clients registering with us each week, with an average of 1,800 registered clients utilizing our services weekly.” This illustrates the increasing burden on local food banks, making community support crucial.
Similar challenges are faced across the Niagara Region, with Jon Braithwaite, CEO of the Hope Centre, revealing a 78% increase in visits to their food bank this year. He emphasizes that this is a problem that cannot be solved alone. Still, with the support of organizations like Habitat for Humanity Niagara, they can at least weather the storm.
GBF Community Services: A Valued Partner in This Endeavor
Megan Kools, the food program manager at GBF Community Services, is enthusiastic about partnering with Habitat for Humanity Niagara and the Grimsby ReStore for the “Restore Our Community Food Drive.” GBF has witnessed an unprecedented number of clients this year, with over 6,000 visits to their Food Bank so far. This food drive is instrumental in keeping their Food Bank shelves stocked and prepared to address the increasing needs in the community.
Aiming Higher: Surpassing Last Year’s Achievements
Last year, the ReStores collected a combined 1,563 pounds of food, an impressive accomplishment. This year, they’re setting their sights even higher, hoping to surpass this remarkable feat.
Easy and Convenient Donation Drop-Off
Donating couldn’t be more accessible. Donations can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, at any ReStore location:
- Grimsby: 185 South Service Rd.
- Fonthill: 2499 Highway 20
- St. Catharines: 150 Bunting Rd.
The food drive runs from September 25th to October 5th, giving you ample time to make a difference in your community.
