Numerator, a market research firm, reveals that about one-third of U.S. consumers are planning to trade down to value or store brands when buying candy for trick-or-treaters this year. It's a clear sign that the rising cost of candy is changing what people buy. The days of indulging in expensive name-brand sweets might be coming to an end for many. Hershey Co., one of the biggest names in the confectionery industry, has raised its prices by 7% or more in each of the last seven quarters. This week, they acknowledged that higher prices are taking a toll on demand. In the July-September period, Hershey's North American confectionary sales volumes fell by 1%.
