In a vibrant tapestry of agricultural celebration and community enrichment, the 2024 Pennsylvania Farm Show is set to dazzle and inspire. Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently embarked on a journey that not only showcased the essence of Pennsylvania’s agriculture but also unveiled the powerful theme of the upcoming 108th Pennsylvania Farm Show: “Connecting Our Communities.” The annual extravaganza, often referred to as Pennsylvania’s State Fair™, is scheduled to unfold from Saturday, January 6 through Saturday, January 13 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show is a living story of Pennsylvania agriculture,” Secretary Redding emphasized during his announcement at the Paxinosa Elementary School in Easton, PA. “It connects those who are fed, nourished, and enriched by our industry to those whose lives and livelihoods depend on it.”
Indeed, agriculture stands as the unifying thread that weaves together diverse aspects of our lives. It is the very foundation of our quality of life and the economic engine that propels our communities. Food is not just sustenance; it’s a cultural and identity-defining element that unites us in countless ways.
At the heart of this narrative is the ‘Eat Real Food Mobile Market,’ a shining example of how agriculture intertwines with the community’s well-being. This mobile market, operated by the Kellyn Foundation, travels to multiple sites on a regular weekly schedule, offering not just food but also sampling, nutritional education, and recipes. It provides a gateway to healthy, locally-sourced food at an affordable price, allowing families to connect with nutritious options and fostering community bonds through agriculture.
What makes this initiative truly remarkable is its origin as a multi-industry partnership. The collaboration between the Kellyn Foundation, the Bethlehem Area School District, the Lehigh Valley Health Network, Penn State Extension, Rodale Institute, the Bethlehem Food Co-Op, Meals on Wheels, and Second Harvest Food Bank exemplifies the spirit of unity that underpins the Pennsylvania Farm Show’s theme. Together, these organizations are fortifying the local food system, ensuring the flourishing of locally grown food production, and championing the cause of community well-being.
As we delve deeper into the tapestry of Pennsylvania’s agricultural landscape, the 2023-24 budget signed by Governor Shapiro takes center stage. It includes a series of critical investments designed to bolster the agricultural sector. Among these investments, $31 million has been allocated to aid poultry farmers impacted by the hi-path avian influenza crisis. This funding will support testing and compensate for losses incurred by poultry farmers.
Furthermore, the budget allocates $34 million under the Agricultural Preparedness and Response line item. This includes $3 million earmarked to combat invasive spotted lanternflies and leverages an additional $3 million in matching funds from the USDA. The fight against invasive species is crucial to protecting Pennsylvania’s agriculture.
Pennsylvania’s commitment to better health outcomes is evident in the allocation of $2 million to fund the Fresh Food Financing Initiative. This program aims to improve access to PA-grown, processed, and produced foods, ultimately benefiting communities by providing access to fresh, nutritious options.
Additionally, a $2 million increase in the State Food Purchase Program is set to provide state funds for emergency food assistance for low-income Pennsylvanians. This increase will facilitate the connection of surplus food donated by farmers through the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System to food banks and food pantries statewide. It also aims to provide low-income seniors with Senior Food Boxes filled with nutritious dietary staples.
One million dollars has been allocated to create a new Organic Center of Excellence, a pioneering initiative designed to empower and support organic farmers and businesses. This innovative approach promises to further diversify Pennsylvania’s agriculture sector.
The budget also dedicates $13.8 million to the fifth year of the PA Farm Bill. This substantial investment will focus on building the workforce, enhancing processing infrastructure, and creating marketing opportunities that the industry needs to thrive. It aims to remove barriers that stand between the agriculture sector and those who aspire to be part of its future.
Now, shifting our gaze to the forthcoming 2024 Farm Show, we discover a plethora of attractions. The 1,000-pound butter sculpture, a perennial favorite, will be a delightful centerpiece. The famous Farm Show Food Court will once again offer a delectable array of culinary delights. Youth showmanship and sheep shearing competitions, among hundreds of other competitive agricultural events, will showcase the talents and dedication of Pennsylvania’s farming community.
The PA Preferred® Culinary Connection will host cooking demonstrations, highlighting the versatility and flavors of Pennsylvania-grown produce. With more than one million square-feet of hands-on agriculture education opportunities, visitors will have ample chances to engage with the individuals who power Pennsylvania’s remarkable $132.5 billion agriculture industry.
“Visiting the PA Farm Show is like taking a journey through the heart of agriculture,” remarked Sharon Myers, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center. “It’s an opportunity to connect with the roots of our food, the spirit of our farming communities, and the boundless possibilities for finding your own path in this industry.”
