However, not all senators were on the same page regarding Williams' appointment. Senate Minority Leader Tim Knopp expressed concerns about what he deemed “problematic” statements made by Williams. Knopp pointed to the ongoing crisis in public education in Oregon, exacerbated by the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the state's response to it. Boquist, who had recently re-registered as a Republican in pursuit of re-election, requested leave to attend a Catholic Mass two hours away. He pointed to September 29, which marks the feast of Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael in the Catholic Church, as the reason for his absence.
